Re-roofing is a quick and simple method of repairing a roof, which involves placing a new layer of shingles over the old worn and damaged layer. It offers an alternative to simply replacing the roof, but is it the best option for you? Here is a guide to when re-roofing is the right solution.

When time and money are an issue

Firstly, re-roofing is a much cheaper option than replacing the roof. As the old shingles do not need to be removed, it takes much less work and, therefore, costs a lot less in labour. For the same reason, the work will not take anything like as long as a full replacement and is also a much quicker option.

When you don't want the inconvenience

Although it may be possible to stay in your home while the roof is being replaced, it will still cause disruption to your home life. The fact that a re-roofing is much quicker means that the disruption and inconvenience will be much less. You and your family should be able to carry on with your lives without having to make major changes.

When it hasn't been done before

A second re-roofing is unlikely to work, as the nails will not be long enough and the roof will be too heavy. However, there are no such problems with the first re-roofing. The single extra layer of shingles will be light enough and thin enough to be fixed on safely and is a much less disruptive alternative to completely replacing the entire roof.

When there isn't extensive damage

If the problem with your roof is with the shingles alone, covering them with a new layer is a much more sensible option and will give your roof a new life without having to pay for a complete replacement. It is, therefore, a good solution if your roof is still basically sound but has minor damage, such as leaks or gaps between the tiles, which require repair. In this situation, the disruption caused by a complete roof replacement would probably not be worth it.

Provided it has not been done before and there is no serious damage, re-roofing is the ideal solution because it is cheaper, quicker and less disruptive. If you are in any doubt just talk to your roofing company who will be able to advise you on which course of action is best for your home.
